GArden goals, not chores.

Some think of work in the garden as “chores.” I prefer to think of my to do list as garden goals. This week, I have three garden goals—totally achievable.

  1.  Deep water my fruiting trees.  This time of year in California is bone dry.  I like to give my fruiting trees a deep watering every couple weeks to ensure their health.  I use a garden hose, turned on low for this and I set a timer for 20 minutes for each tree.

  2. Cut back spent perennials.  Plants like hardy geraniums and Nepeta benefit from a hard cut back this time of year.  In my garden their first flush of growth is pretty pooped by July.  A good haircut will give me a second flush of broth and blooms before fall.

  3. Dead heading.  To ensure repeat blooming I dedicate a fair amount of time in the garden to deadheading.  I especially focus on anything repeat blooming like roses, dahlias cosmos and the like.  I made a short video for my Instagram Stories on deadheading dahlias.  Check that out on Substack.
